"Smooth pursuit is tested by instructing the subject to carefully follow a small target that is moving slowly and smoothly back and forth. If the target is moved too rapidly even normal subjects will demonstrate jerky or cogwheel pursuit. The pursuit eye movements can accurately track the target and produce a smooth pattern. Vertical pursuit often shows slight catch up saccades. Closer view shows a few small catch up saccades especially when the target reverses direction. This small amount of jerking is normal."
