"The examiner either rotates the subject's
chair slowly back and forth or the subject's head. The subject is
asked to fixate a target straight in front of her. The eyes make
large smooth movements. In this test fixation and smooth pursuit
cooperate and work synergistically with the vestibular reflex to
produce these large movements. Rapid head movements must be made in
order to produce vestibular movements in unconscious
patients."
