"A downbeat nystagmus was present in
center gaze in this man who probably had an infarction in the
cerebellum. The amplitude is increased in lateral gaze. The patient
noted vertical oscillopsia in lateral gaze due to the increase in
size of the downbeat nystagmus. The amplitude of the nystagmus
decreased in upgaze. The nystagmus was present in downgaze. The
effect of vertical gaze is variable among patients for as downbeat
nystagmus is almost always increased by lateral gaze."
